Northwestern University's men's golf squad recently achieved a commendable tied-for-sixth position among 24 competing teams at the esteemed Prestige tournament, held at PGA West. The competition concluded prematurely on Wednesday due to severe winds, following two days of intense play.
A standout performance by Daniel Svärd spearheaded the Wildcats' effort, as he clinched a spot in the top 10 individually. Despite a challenging start with a 74 in the opening round, Svärd dramatically improved on Tuesday, carding an impressive 5-under 66. This stellar second-round display propelled him to a total of 140, placing him just three strokes behind the tournament leader and a single stroke shy of four players who shared second place. The team's collective performance saw Ethan Tseng finish tied for 29th, while Rowan Sullivan and Jeremy Chen secured a tied 41st position. Monty Holcombe rounded out the team's scores, finishing tied for 66th.
In a separate individual event at the GC At Terra Lago, several other Wildcats showcased their talent. Mark Gazi distinguished himself with a third-place finish, posting a 1-over 217. Isaac Lee followed closely behind in fourth, just two strokes behind Gazi, despite a tougher final round after an excellent start. Archie Finnie and Akshay Anand also competed, finishing tied for 34th and 40th, respectively, gaining valuable experience. The team now looks forward to their next challenge, the two-day Colleton River Collegiate tournament in Bluffton, S.C., scheduled for early March.
